Learning design and technology

About

I have spent more than a decade building courses, the systems that deliver them, and the teams that produce them. My training is in pedagogy, which is the part that decides whether any of the rest of it works.

Where I have worked

I am currently e-learning coordinator at Project Harmony in Omaha. Before that I was senior learning and development administrator at Ventura County Credit Union, running compliance and regulatory training, competency modelling, and manager coaching for a financial institution.

Most of my career was at Bellevue University, across three roles. As senior instructional technologist I administered the LMS and media platforms serving more than fourteen thousand learners. As manager of learning media I led a team of fourteen across video production, 3D art, and software engineering, and owned the technology budget including enterprise Kaltura, Adobe, and Captivate licensing. I started there as a developer building courses and the institutional web framework they ran on, contributing to more than forty courses across twelve academic programs.

How I work

I write objectives before content and assessments before activities, because a course that cannot tell you whether it worked is a document, not a course. I build what I design rather than handing a storyboard to someone else, which keeps the design honest about what is actually possible.

I also coach. I hold Integrity Solutions certification for management coaching, and a good deal of my work has been sitting with managers and faculty rather than with authoring tools.

Education

  • Master of Music, Pedagogy and Performance (Piano), North Dakota State University, 2013. Graduate teaching assistant and adjunct faculty.
  • Bachelor of Music, Pedagogy and Performance (Piano), Brandon University, 2011, summa cum laude.
  • Integrity Solutions Certified Coach, management and performance coaching.

Studying music pedagogy means years spent watching a person try something, diagnosing exactly why it is not working, and adjusting the instruction on the spot. That is the same skill instructional design runs on.
